Stop attributing all BtVS quotes to Joss Whedon, please. He didn't write every episode, he didn't direct every episode, so stop taking really good quotes written by other people and attributing them solely to Whedon. I'm sure some Whedon fans would be upset if something he did write, like "Once More With Feeling," was misattributed to another writer. If you can't find or are too lazy to look up who wrote what episode, then just attribute the quote to the character who was speaking. Television can be tricky because so many people have the potential to have input on what's being written (all the more reason to just attribute quote to a character instead). However, sometimes it's is like taking a quote from The Hobbit and attributing it to Peter Jackson instead of J.R.R. Tolkien just because Jackson is filming the movie. The quote may appear in both print and film, but Tolkien's the one who wrote it.

With that being said, did Whedon write Spike's speech in "Touched?" I was under the impression that Rebecca Rand Kirshner wrote the episode and therefore the speech was her writing. However, if someone said something in an interview or convention Q&A to say otherwise, I'd like to know to satisfy my own curiosity.

See, I thought I had heard that somewhere, but I cannot find any sources saying that he did (maybe my Google-fu is broken). I see people attributing it to him, and I wonder if it's on the DVD commentary (if Touched has a commentary). I can find sources for when he rewrote the church scene in "Beneath You" though! The more I've delved into history, the more I've become increasingly paranoid by misattribution.

That depresses me, because I think it's a forced comparison to Riley's speech in AYW, and as such doesn't work very well.

Maybe it's just me but I've never really like the phrase "you're a hell of a..." It just bothers me so much in a lot of contexts.

When it comes to rewrites and additions, one has to wonder what could have been. I personally like the original "Beneath You" church scene (as it was on paper though I'd love to see it as it was filmed), for example.

I'm glad that one got changed - it had a couple of good things in it, but it made Spike into yet another character with tiresome Daddy issues, and we get enough of that in the jossverse. :P

I still would like to see what it looked like after it was filmed, if only to see if Buffy comes off better or worse than she does in the one that aired. That's one special feature on the DVDs that I wish for. Perhaps one day yet.

I kinda think Joss did write it (then again, it also sounded virtually identical to a speech made by Riley so then the answer would be ... which time?)

I just can't find a source for it. I think I've broken my Googling skills (that, or I'm too tired to properly concentrate).

I'm just seeing quotes attributed wrongly all over Tumblr, not just to Whedon, and it finally irritated me enough to post something about it. In the BtVS tags, though, it's rampant. It's like Doug Petrie wrote FFL, and I saw a quote yesterday attributing some of Spike's speeches in FFL to Whedon. It's like I'm sure other writers (including Whedon) had a hand in the script's finalization (not to mention the fact that Nick Marck could have changed things around during filming), but I don't like seeing the other writers for the show getting cast aside for someone else's sake.

Well, you know, Joss is dog. Oh wait. That's "God" isn't it? [pretend there's an eyerolling icon here]

This is utterly tangential, but I never can find fandom things on tumblr, yet everyone else can.

I usually only find them when someone reblogs something else. I think the fandom things on Tumblr don't get tagged properly enough to search.
