On Facebook, my cousin's ten year old daughter asked for advice for things to do during the summer. I suggested doing some creative writing or possibly going on a nature walk and documenting/sketching the various flora and fauna she found... Cue a deluge of comments from her and her ten year old friends calling me "stupd," "no kol," and "boreing."

*sigh* I am certain that I was not obnoxious like that as a child... and I definitely had much better spelling than them.

Whenever I would substitute teach, I would call all the children "Padawans"... At least I did until the day I had Anakin in a class, and after that, I never said it again. I didn't realize that there was a SW-relatedly named kid in the room. I said, "All Padawans need to take their seats." Most kids just laugh it off, even if they pretend to not know what "padawans" are from, but poor Anakin just slammed his fist down on the desk, his whole face went bright red, and he started screaming, "WHO TOLD YOU?!" over and over again. I was about to call the office because he was freaking out so badly until a girl quietly whispered that he hated Star Wars because of his name (on the roll book, he went by his middle name instead of Anakin, so I had no idea). I took Anakin aside and told him that I really loved Star Wars, but that I understood that having a fandom-related name could be almost unbearable. He calmed down and seemed to get that I wasn't trying to upset him. I also told him that if he wanted to get revenge on his parents he should become an avid Star Trek fan. That made him laugh at least.
