Just reading some of the licensed novels, you have to wonder what in the world the writers were watching. The Spikes in the novels range from the evil seducer to the frightened schoolboy to the damaged lover to the Puckish prankster to the murdering psychopath to the Champion of All Things Good and Light. Sometimes I have different Spikes running about in my head. I've got weepy!Spike who is made of woobie and cute and needs to be held... usually by Angel. And then I've got the Spike that is closer to my kind of canon, which by your description is a lot like your Spike... only mine has a tendency to break, but to always put himself back together again in his own Spike-like way. And these are all the reasons why fandom is a rich tapestry of good, bad, and indifferent woven together to create a vast landscape of individual opinions.
My new credo is "Don't Tread on My Canon." I'm going to make icons! ... Right after I post the next chapter of Paper Pusher and upload some of these mini-comics I've got going. XD
