They have the responsibility to do world building over again so that the plot can support suspension of disbelief the characters need to become real for us.
Indeed, indeed, indeed. I think it makes for a richer 'verse that way in my opinion.

I have to wonder, though, if you have a different DVD commentary from the rest of us. That's not what Joss said on my Chosen DVD.
The exact quote is:
Joss: "This was an interesting scene because both James and Sarah came to it from the wrong place, really. They were playing things falling apart, and the terror of it, and I said that what I wanted was for them to completely distance themselves from it. I explained how all the sound was going to drift out.
[Their hands burst into flames]
I thought that this was a sort of romantic image, the two of them. We actually did it with real fire but their hands were all gelled up and you could tell, so this was added CGI, and looks beautiful. I thought it was a nice comment on their relationship. But what I basically told them was "Play the romance. Be proud of him. Love him when you say you love him. Love her when you say she doesn't love you. Forget about the crumbling world. For that period of time it doesn't exist." "

[livejournal.com profile] stormwreath transcribed the whole commentary here. (http://stormwreath.livejournal.com/53253.html?thread=988421)
