This latest cover for BtVS S8 fails. Fails hardcore. Not just because I am a Japanophile, but because I have taken a lot of art history... and this offends my eyes and reeks of the booze. This is more tragic than the nonsensical kanji, katakana, and hiragana that appeared in Spike: Shadow Puppets. No! Well, now I have to go draw Angel as an Oiran and Spike as a Geisha. XD

First off, Godzilla and Gamera? What the hell? Why is this katakana on a Edo-era style Ukiyo-e print?! No! It does not belong there! It especially doesn't belong there if it says "Gojira (Godzilla)" or "Gamera". No. Not ever.

Second off, what's with the obis? The obis offend my eyes most of all. It's like the comic artist said, "Hey, I like these woodblock prints. Look at that lady with her obi in front and her kimono slidding off her shoulder. She looks hot. I'll draw Willow like that." No. You fail, artist person. Willow is not an Oiran. She does not belong in a red light district brothel. Look at how loosely it is tied? Did she just jump Samurai Xander's bones? WTF? Seriously.

Thirdly, what the hell kinda ugly kimono is Buffy wearing? Why is your obi in the front too?! It's like, let's make something stereotypical! Chopsticks equal no, Ugly American Buffy. You bring shame and dishonour onto your comic. Now, go commit harekare and/or seppoku for your sins and wash the stink of shame from the Darkhorse name.

Here's the original cover for your own edification.

And does Xander have breasts in that picture? 'Cause that really looks like cleavage.

Blech.

LOL to the tiny Gamera & Gojira drawings. It's like bad tattoo art.
I thought the same thing when I saw those stupid chopsticks in her hair, too. Samurai certainly wouldn't stick eating utensils in their hair. Eeew, unsanitary. Costumes are as wrong as that god-awful flooffy dress Buffy wore in Halloween purporting to be 17th century ladieswear.
Good job with the fun-poking, fenderez.

Most published comic book artists never took art history. Just ask one. They think Baroque style applies to only music.

! And that Jackson Pollock is the ONLY artist who did their own thing (asides the fact they're the only artist they can name).

Thanks inkist internship. You taught me american comic artists are douchebags.

i enjoy your gamera. very much. it really makes me feel better about the fact that it looks like it's going to rain for another straight day.

i doubt willow's an oiran.... i mean, oiran were high-class courtesans. she looks markedly, erm, not-high-class in that rendering. >_>

Bwaha! For the same reason that Japanese T-shirts have things like "King Fucker Chicken" written in English on them. The Japanese designers like the look of English/Romanji letters and don't care what they say, and the American designers (such as this nitwit comic book artist) like the look of Japanese Kanji and Kana letters and don't care what they say, either. He/she probably thought that using the names of Japanese movie monsters was a fabulous in-joke.

Between the cultural inaccuracies and Xander's pillowy titties, I'm gladder than ever that I have no interest in Season 8.

Your critique and red-ink corrections/commentary are so fricking awesome! I love mini-gamera and godzilla very much, and agree, Xander's breasts are very disturbing...
