Spoiler for the New Spike Series.

Straight from the horse's mouth, via Buffyfest Blog's interview with Brian Lynch at NYComic Con.

A spoiler for the Spike series that BL wrote recently. This is the opening scene of the Spike series. Apparently, the day after everything went back to normal in L.A., lots of screenwriters clamored to the studios pitching movie ideas about everyone being sucked into hell. In the Spike series, Spike goes to see one of the movies that got made. It's called "Last Angel in Hell" and it's a Jerry Bruckheimer-esque flick with Nick Cage as Angel and since they couldn't make Gunn the bad guy (something about you can't make the black guy the bad guy anymore), so they made him the wacky sidekick played by Hurly from Lost? The studio execs decided Angel needed a love interest in the movie so they made Spike a woman so that s/he could be the love interest... and Betta George is a dog in the movie. The real Angel and Spike go to see the movie the day it comes out, not realizing that the other would be there, so it's very awkward for them to be seeing Nick Cage!Angel and blonde girl!Spike kissing on screen. Spike gets a little pissy that "This is what people will remember me as!" because Hollywood decided to Hollywoodize the story to make money off of it.

If you want to read the rest of my transcript of the interview, please visit the ATF thread in the Comic Section at CDS.

Um - does this count as Spangel by proxy?

:is completely confuzzled:

Yes, and in #17 we learn that Spike and Angel bought cellphones and exchanged numbers. Spike's ringtone for Angel is "The Girl From Ipanema." BL said that in the director's cut of the issue for the trade paperback, he may have to actually have to draw the scene where they exchanged digits. *Quagmire voice* Awwwwll right. XD

Actually, one of the Buffyfest people said to him, "Joss did say that Angel always needs a blonde in his life." Brian agreed that that's Spike. :D Angel's going to be appearing a lot in the Spike series, so we'll see where it goes.

I don't mind the Spangel stuff one bit. Angel can be in Spike's comic as much as he likes. But I've read all of what you said about part 2 of the Buffyfest interview on CDS now and I can't believe he thinks he can change people's minds about Spider. It's like he didn't read his own comic.

First he wrote her as a bimbo in a thong, then as probably evil. Then, like you said, as serially sexually assaulting Spike in prison.

[identity profile] angearia.livejournal.com 2009-02-11 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh god, no. Not Spider. Kill her! Please! Just let it go, Brian. Let it go, man. Back away from the Spider slowly.

Sorry, god knows why he can't understand why folks have a problem with her.

I'm such a Spangel. :D
You see, BL has what I call "writer's amnesia" in which he doesn't fully understand what he wrote. I've met many writers like that. On the IDW Forums, when people asked him about Spike getting assaulted, he seemed confused and said something to the extent of "Who wouldn't want a hot chick crawling all over them?" However, Franco seemed to have understood perfectly and drew the panels accordingly (showing Spike's disgust and anguish), yet Brian still doesn't GET IT even though he wrote the damn script with the dialogue! ARGH! This is one of those moments that Lewis Black describes as so incomprehensible that it gives you an aneurysm. He doesn't get why people like Beck and not Spider. You know, I supported Spider up until S: ATF because I thought she had a story to be told (a girl taken against her will by some cult and changed into a half-human/half-spider creature has potential- especially since it was Wiccan tampering and could be compared to what Buffy did to all the Potential Slayers all over the world), but after S: ATF where she basically said, "If you don't give me what I want, I'll take it" I threw up my hands at the whole situation.

He's a bloke. What else can you say really. :0

[identity profile] fenderlove.livejournal.com 2009-02-11 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
It boggles the mind that he thinks that a guy could get a hot poker to the groin and still want consensual sex. BOGGLES! It's like he wrote it in his sleep or something. *dies*

Bloke here, finding Spider about as appealing as a pint of rancid lemon juice.

I think you're the exception to the rule love. Your usual comic book teen seems to love that kind of thing.

LOL! I think if we combine your rancid lemon juice and my flaming hot biscotti to the eye, we'd have a real powerful weapon! :D

Well, I've left a comment on his blog, for all the good it'll do. If he's determined to make people change their minds about this character, I guess he'll keep trying.

Plus, I don't think I'm one of his favourite people.

Must listen to the other half of that interview myself once I've read the comic.

[identity profile] fenderlove.livejournal.com 2009-02-11 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not a sure thing that he's going to include her. He said that he wants to, seemed to be planning on it, but he knew that people really strongly disliked her. I'm amazed he thinks if he keeps trying people would magically like her.

Guess he's probably feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the negative comments now.

Hopefully, if he does insist on bringing the character back it will just be to tie up some loose ends.

[identity profile] fenderlove.livejournal.com 2009-02-12 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Perhaps, a few of the people on his blog said they wouldn't mind her coming back if it was to show her being beheaded like in Illyria's time-shift. ^_~

I know I'm not one of his favorite people. I'm going to leave a comment on his blog, too, although it'll be a repeat of the same thing I've explained to him five or six times at IDW already.

God, these comics are turning into a nightmare.

[identity profile] sockmonkeyhere.livejournal.com 2009-02-12 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
ETA: I didn't mean that the Spike & Angel bits are a nightmare; I mean his decision to not bring Fred back and to remove Spike from the rest of the canon characters and probably pair him up with Spider.

I think I just threw up in my mouth a little.

[identity profile] fenderlove.livejournal.com 2009-02-12 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
There was no mention of pairing her up with Spike. Brian just seems to be interested in making her somehow likable. The only thing Brian understands is that making she and Spike a couple would be the least likely way to do that (thank God for small favours).

I hate the IDW forums. This is the fifth time in six months I've tried registering and I can't seem to get anyone to activate my account. Grrr to them!

I'm glad he understands that, but I don't know if it would be enough to prevent him from deciding to try it anyway. (Fingers crossed that it will!)

That's odd that you can't get registered at IDW. Have you e-mailed them to let them know about the problem?

[identity profile] fenderlove.livejournal.com 2009-02-12 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, I've had no response from anyone. I've tried registering with different email addresses and everything. I'm running out of ways to make usernames out of "Fenderlove!"

Something tells me I'm about to get into a posting war over on BL's blog. Some lameass who obviously didn't read other people's posts wrote: "Wow, I am perplexed by all the negative reaction to Spider here. She is a very complex and interesting character, one that might be explained further in Spike's comic. He will require a support system of his own and she would fit that role. Beck would be another obvious choice. My vote would be for both characters to join Spike in his new adventure."

To which I responded, "Dear Anonymous Poster,
I think all the negative stems from the fact that she sexually exploited a man in a very vulnerable position by using his desire to protect those around him to get into his pants. Franco's art shows the disgust. If you place a female character in the same position as Spike and a male character in place of Spider, I doubt people would be clamoring for the two to get together. For God's sake, he'd just been stabbed in the groin with a hot poker, and she still wanted to do him, all the while taunting him that she would just take what she wanted if he didn't allow her to do so! She had no sympathy for him or those he was trying to save. It's not fun; it's not sexy; it's degradation at its lowest level."

I've said it once and I'll say it again, someone is going to get a flaming hot biscotti in the eye if they cross me today. I have had a very, very bad fucking day. >__

Right there with ya, FriendGirl.

[identity profile] fenderlove.livejournal.com 2009-02-12 09:39 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously, I'm like mourning my love of Brian. All those times I fucking defended him and his lameassness! ARGH!!! I mean, I still love his writing, but I've defended his fucking asshat behavior towards people. Hell, I defended Spider for the first five issues of ATF! Lord knows! (Although I do stand by the fact that I had no reason to truly dislike her until later.)

[identity profile] sockmonkeyhere.livejournal.com 2009-02-14 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Absolutely you gave her a fair chance, and when S:AtF revealed that she was truly ghastly, you had every reason to assume that BL intended for her to be seen that way. Who knew that he has a completely warped view of criminal and immoral behavior? And who knew that he has such a petty, nasty side when readers fail to agree with him?

Seriously, I'm like mourning my love of Brian.

I understand completely; I'm in that same state of mourning, for my love of the AtF comics. That love has been crushed and destroyed and now it makes me sick to read them, but I still remember the joy they once gave me and it breaks my heart that I'll never get that joy back. (Yeah, I was stupid enough to look at a download of the last issue, and the finality regarding Fred that BL ground into it just shattered me. I will never, ever make the mistake of looking at any of them again.)

It's like you were betrayed by him, isn't it? Like you were fooled into defending him when he asked readers to have faith in what he was doing, and he repaid you by suddenly turning into an irrational, spiteful toad. And you keep remembering your pre-toad happiness, and you just want it back.
